I am writing to you concerning Japan's illegal whaling in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary. Although I understand that the British government has already written to the Japanese State Secretary for Foreign Affairs asking for an immediate suspension of the whaling programme, I believe a signal from Tony Blair would indicate to Japan how seriously the British people take Japan's undermining of international conservation agreements and international law.

Japan is now effectively engaged in a resumption of full-blown commercial whaling, and the effectiveness of international environmental agreements is at stake. Please could you urge the Prime Minister to do all he personally can to stop Japan whaling in the sanctuary.

Yours sincerely
