Trade ministers visit the Rainbow Warrior

During the third day of the WTO meeting in Qatar, the European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy and the Belgian Trade Minister Mme Annemie Netys-Uyttebroeck visited the Rainbow Warrior to meet the onboard witnesses and discuss the environment at the WTO.

They met and listened to the stories from the onboard witnesses, as well as completing an interview for "No New Round Radio".

Earlier in the day, the WTO secretariat issued a document claiming there was 'virtual unanimity' on dropping discussions on the environment at the talks.

Pascal Lamy meets Thomas Kocherry, Indian witness on the deck of the Rainbow Warrior. This means that trade continues to trump the environment.

Later in the day, Lamy strongly emphasised that the EU had not changed its position on including environment at the talks.

Other sources quietly confirmed that the work of the working group on environment was proceeding.

There have been strong rumours that the talks are in deep trouble and the eventual outcome will be either no new round (or a new round with a severely limited mandate -- perhaps the more likely outcome).
