GREENPEACE WELCOMES STRONG SIGNAL FROM THE EU TO PRESIDENT BUSH
23 March 2001
Brussels, Belgium: Greenpeace welcomes the initiative of the EU, who sent a letter yesterday to President Bush to insist that the US engage in combatting climate change.
Since 13 March 2001, the environmental community and many countries around the world have been appalled at the contents of a letter sent by President Bush to Senator Hagel and others – in particular, the statements that the President is "opposed to the Kyoto Protocol" and that there is an "incomplete state of scientific knowledge of the causes, and solutions to, global climate change".
"This letter signed at the highest level of the EU hierarchy gives a strong political signal to Mr Bush that he must not obstruct the international negotiation on climate change" said Michel Raquet, climate advisor of Greenpeace. "The message is crystal clear: President Bush should take his ostrich head out of the sand", he added.
Greenpeace urges now all the EU Heads of States, who are currently meeting in Stockholm, to adopt a Declaration that clearly demands that President Bush stop opposing the Kyoto Protocol and positively engage with the resumed Cop-6 negotiations. "The scientific evidence of climate change does not permit any one of us, especially the world's biggest polluter - the USA, to waste time in delaying action", Michel Raquet concluded.FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT:
