Cath's diary
It is pretty incredible being part of this campaign. There are
Greenpeace offices all around the world campaigning on ancient
forests. There are kids for forests projects working towards
ancient forest friendly schools; there are international scientists signing
our petition; there are ancient forest guardians (concerned celebrities
supporting our campaign); and there are tens of thousands of
other people around the world taking action on their own or supporting our
work - doing everything from bringing warm drinks to our
activists in Germany to sending faxes and emails to their
governments to staging demonstrations. It is really something.
There have been a lot of high spots already, with so many
people from so many places working together towards a single goal.
But for me one of the best moments so far came when we managed
to intercept a shipment of Russian timber coming from SLDK - a
Russian sawmill known to be sourcing wood from clearcutting
the Arkhangelsk region's last ancient forests. This action was
important for me because it was an opportunity to show that this campaign is
not just about tropical forests.
It's about any logging in ancient forests that
is done without concern for the forests, the plants and animals
that live in them, and the people that depend on them. This includes
the tropical forests of the Amazon, Africa and Asia-Pacific, the
temperate forests of South and North America, and the boreal
forests of Russia, Canada and Scandinavia.
Let's just hope that all this work, and all this support, has a
positive influence on the politicians responsible for protecting the last
ancient forests, and that they come up with a concrete plan for
forest conservation at the end of April's Ancient Forest Summit.
The ancient forest summit starts in 6 days. Add your voice to the many demanding protection for the world’s last remaining ancient forests.
