Past updates

Greenpeace activists around Europe, and the world, are taking action against imports of unsustainably logged wood. This April, governments from around the world will be meeting here in the Netherlands to decide if they should finally take substantial action to save the last of the ancient forests. On board the Esperanza, we are taking action of our own to help them decide...

Action updates

Stop ancient forest destruction. 25th, 26th March 2002
Protesting the Finnhawk

The Finnhawk is carrying paper with pulp made from Finland's last ancient forests. Blockading the Finnhawk, and its cargo, was a chance for us to highlight that it is not only less industrialized nations that are irresponsibly destroying their forests. Aside from forests in western Russia, the forests in Finland are the only intact ancient forests left in Europe, and the Finnish government is cutting them down as fast as it can.

Minute by minute updates - day 1, day 2

Bill's personal account of the action.

Sounds and pictures of the end of our protest demanding protection, and responsible management, for Finland's last ancient forests.

Damian and Harry talk about their night occupying the raised stern ramp.

Stopping the Kapitan Mochalov

The Mochalov is carrying spruce and pine timber from the ancient forests of Russia. Although there are other important intact habitats - the Russian boreal forest is among the last of the world's vast intact ancient forests (along with those in Canada and the Amazon). In addition to sending the message that Europe should not be buying ancient forest destruction, this action helped dispel the myth that it's only tropical forests that need protection.

Minute by minute updates - day 1, day 2

Ingrid reports from on board a life raft attached to the Mochalov's anchor chain.

Cath reports from on board the Esperanza on the success of the action.

Boarding the Agat

The Esperanza's first action ever. We boarded the Agat, painted the ship and logs, and later blocked the unloading. The logs were giant Azobe tree trunks from Liberia. It felt good to lead off with an action against unsustainably logged wood from Africa - since the continent is a major source of wood for Europe, but is not so often reported on or thought about in connection with saving ancient forests.

Minute by minute updates - day 1, day 2, day 3

Sounds from the Gray Whale (safety boat for the climber on the anchor chain).

Dave (on the bridge of the Esperanza) radios the climbers to let them know what's happening.

Donald calls in an update from the top of one of the Agat's cranes.

Rod from the cab of a shore crane.

Sandra, also on the top of a ship's crane, as the police move in.
