Name: Babett
Position on board: Deckhand
Nationality: Germany
During the last 2 months of being here we were trying to get the
new ship ready for our first campaign. It was hard work to get all
the action/deck equipment and tools organised as we shifted stuff
around again and again.
This is my 4th time on a Greenpeace ship. I joined a ship the first time as a
volunteer in Freemantle (Western Australia) about 2 years ago - after studying at university, living in the jungle of Sumatra for a few months and working in Australia.
I actually was on my way to work as I saw the MV Arctic Sunrise and
the MV Greenpeace in port of Freemantle, and went down for a visit.
After 2 weeks of working on the ships I sailed down with them to
the wild Southern Ocean on a fishery campaign surrounded by
penguins, whales and the gigantic Albatrosses.
Now that it's the first time I'm involved in a forest campaign/action - I
remember my time in the jungle of Sumatra when the smoke of
the burning forest was all over, and watching the orang-utans at the
rehabilitation centre, one of the only two areas in the world where a
few those amazing creatures still live in the wild.
