My name is Cath - or Catherine. I'm from the UK but escaped a few years ago to live in Amsterdam.

I come to Greenpeace from a career as a plant biologist. The reason I chose being an activist over being a scientist is because there comes a time when you know enough to act, and we are well past that point with the forests - if we wait any longer they will all have gone.

As a youngster, hanging around with my two brothers, a good day out was one where we went to the woods down the road - a tiny little wild place in the middle of one of Europe's biggest housing estates - and either climbed around on the 'broken down tree' or made dens in the undergrowth. As I got older, moving to new towns, I would always look around for the trees before deciding where to live. I guess I feel better around trees than not.

On the Esperanza, the people make up for the lack of trees.
