Name: Deb
Position on board: Deckhand
Nationality: Australian
History with Greenpeace: I began as a volunteer in the Melbourne office - Australia -
progressed(?) to office manager. From there a move to Sydney to
work in the Actions Unit for 2 and 1/2 years and since 1999 I have
been working on the ships.
Favourite action: A three-week blockade on Ista Island (BC, Canada)
with a number of groups including the Nuxaulk (the tribal owners of
the land) to halt overzealous clearcutting practices in ancient
forests - at risk a number of bear species in addition to severely
disrupting a diverse ecosystem by the aforementioned
unsustainable practices.
What like best about the Esperanza: Espy - I like the fact she has proven herself to be a more than
adequate barrel of steel. Of course there are many items that need
a little fine tuning, but the first action has provided us with a much
clearer insight into what should be the priorities. I'm also glad that
the first action was such a success - it bodes well for the future.
