Name: Luke
Position on board: Deckhand
Nationality: UK
History with Greenpeace: I came to Greenpeace after a long involvement in other
environmental and social justice campaigning. I first started to work for Greenpeace during the conversion project of the Esperanza, spending six months working in the shipyard, helping to keep the costs down and the time period as short as possible. This is my first sailing tour with this organization, it is all very exciting, and all the crew are great people, very welcoming and a lot of fun.
Favourite Forest: I wouldn't like to choose a favourite forest, but my favourite type of forests are those which contain a lot of indigenous species of trees and fauna - as this is the most practical and useful type of habitat to maintain the local ecosystems, from insects to birds, etc. After all, ecosystems are totally interconnected and inter-dependant, so if you don't maintain a healthy balance of indigenous plant life, how can you expect
the rest of the system to survive?
Favourite thing about the Esperanza: My favourite aspect of the Esperanza is the fact that most things
aboard actually work. After spending six months tearing the old
Echo Fighter apart, and putting her back together with all the new
features of the Esperanza, it is very relieving to see that she
actually moves through the water, that the toilets usually work, and
that the new and IKEA-clean galley is up and running, so crew
moral can never wane!
In many respects it's a real privilege to be part of the first action
crew of this vessel, but its not all good news, when we are not on
action duty there are still all those jobs we didn't quite finish in the
shipyard, like painting the entire ship...again!
