I started working on the Esperanza at the conversion stage. Initially, it was for three weeks, but the enthusiasm for the project was so infectious I ended up staying for six months. It's very satisfying to sail on the finished article, and the Esperanza will contribute greatly to the effectiveness of Greenpeace actions for years to come.
I've been involved with various environmental and political movements for a while, but this is my first Greenpeace campaign.
Forest depletion is such a massive issue worldwide, but generally governments lack the political will and companies lack an incentive to address the issue. Greenpeace is one of the few organizations with the resources and capacity to pressure these large institutions. Ultimately, this is why I've become involved with Greenpeace. I believe environmentalism starts at home, but when faced with the resources of companies engaged in the international trade of unsustainably logged wood, it is helpful to have a global environmental campaign to protect the forests.
