April 12: France and Germany announce action to halt ancient forest detruction and pledge to highlight the issue at this weekend's G8 environment minister's meeting. more>

Forty-four Grenpeace activists dressed as spotted owls will march at the meeting on Sunday to see environment ministers off the the Ancient Forest Summit in the Hague.

April 11: Along with ancient forest loss, comes habitat destruction and species extinction. Greenpeace is taking a stand for animals dependent on forests, such as the gorillas in Africa, the Humuel in Chile and the Brown bear and Siberian tiger in Russia's vast ancient forests. more>

April 10: Greenpeace activists in the UK and the Netherlands expose those governments' role in African ancient forest destruction while in Brazil the government takes a stand and continues the ban on mahogany. more>

April 9: Greenpeace activists in Gotenburg, Sweden have been keeping watch in the last ancient forests of Sweden where logging was scheduled to start today. The loggers arrived and the police quickly went to work. more>

April 8: Clara, 19, from Germany spoke to delegates durning the afternoon plenary session. After many men in suits, Clara went to the podium in a "save the ancient forests now" t-shirt and placed a jaguar mask to her face. Listen to her speech to the delegates.

Not only has the Forest Service clearcut tens of hectares of old-growth forest in here. They have chopped down everything, pines hundreds of years old and almost all of the dead trees." April 7:Governments are meeting in the Hague for the next two weeks to decide the fate of the world's ancient forests. Delegates are greeted by kids chanting and animals of the ancient forests. more>

April 4: One year has passed since the historic April 2001 agreement,when a different political party in power agreed to protect 603,000 hectares of ancient temperate rainforest of the west coast of Canada.

But this historic agreement is now threatened by the government's inaction. more>

March 29: The European Commission is now warning all European countries to reject Brazilian mahogany. This advice comes after a ban on mahogany trade by the Brazilian government. more>

March 26: Greenpeace activists boarded the Finnhawk which is carrying a cargo of paper from Finland's last ancient forests to Germany. One Greenpeace inflatable was crushed between the dock by the cargo ship as the Finnhawk attempted to dock. more>

March 25: In Salerno near Naples Greenpeace activists end 70 hour occupation of a container ship carrying timber from ancient forests in Cameroon. more>

March 25: Greenpeace activists occupied a Russian sawmill near the White Sea today to warn that one of Europe's last great forests is being turned into lumber. Germany is a major importer of the sawmill's products. more>

March 24: Greenpeace today carried out a historic event at the Great Wall of China to call on all governments to place similar barricades in the way of illegal logging and destruction to protect the world's remaining ancient forests. more>

March 22: At the Greek port of Lefkanti, Greenpeace activists prevented the offloading of timber from ancient Liberian forests today. The port serves companies implicated in human rights abuses and arms trafficking in Liberia and Sierra Leone. more>

March 22: The German government announced yesterday that it will seize all imports of Brazilian mahogany until it can be verified the timber came from legal sources. Other EU nations have followed suit. more>

March 20: In north-east China, 200 elementary school students and 40 professors stood in one of China's few surviving ancient forests and told their government to stop forest destruction, clean up the timber trade and fund ancient forest protection. more>

March 18:
 Greenpeace holds MV Kapitan Mochalov off the coast of the Netherlands with activists chained to the anchor. The Russian ship is carrying timber from the ancient forests of Russia for European markets. more>
