Name: Cees
Position on Board: RO (Radio Operator/Communications
Technician)
Nationality: Dutch
History with Greenpeace: I started in July 2001
on the MV Arctic Sunrise as trainee RO on the STOP STARWARS
campaign in Greenland. After this campaign we sailed to
Brazil. There I joined the Deni Demarcation Project and
stayed for two months in Brazil's rainforest on a ship named
Comte Savio as RO.
Favourite Forest or Best Tree Experience: The best
one was the Deni Demarcation Project. We spent 1.5 months
working in the jungle. Even though we did not have any publicity
(the project was launched just after the 11th of September)
we made it into a big success. Thanks to all the stories
which were published on the web, a lot of people sent a
reaction to the Brazilian government and after a couple
of weeks they started to negotiate with the leader of the
Deni Indians. The government cooperated and very soon there
was an agreement and we saved a little piece of the rainforest.
The trees in this area are more than 50 meters high and
take all the sunlight away. It is warm, humid and every
second you hear a different animal making sounds. The way
the people live there is in harmony with nature. I was impressed
by the story of one of the locals telling that they only
hunt for what they need. So if, for example, a pig gives
food for five persons and there are four to feed, they will
let it run and look for one which gives food for four persons.
The other pig stays alive and might give another family
food or bring new pigs, which means food in the future.
