Name: Dmitri
Position on Board: Second Mate
Nationality: Russian
History with Greenpeace: I first sailed with Greenpeace
on the Rainbow Warrior one year ago in New Zealand for the
genetic engineering campaign. In March 2001 I was involved
in the Nuclear Free Tasman Flotilla in the Tasman Sea which
blocked plutonium shipments coming Europe to Japan. While
this action was not organized by Greenpeace, the Rainbow
Warrior participated. This is my first four-month stint
with the fleet, and I hope to remain with Greenpeace for
a long time. I like what we are doing on the ship and believe
that Greenpeace is doing the right things. It's a good feeling
to know that you are doing something to make the world better.
The Rainbow Warrior is a very special boat for me - the
people on the ship and the feelings it inspires are very
important to me.
Favourite Forest or Best Tree Experience: I grew
up on Sakhalin Island and spent all my childhood outside
in the forest and rivers. I have been very close to nature
since I was born.
Americans who came to Sakhalin called it the land of the
Christmas trees. The evergreen forest is beautiful - in
the summertime you go to the forest and feel at home and
feel happiness. When snow covers the forest everything is
very white and silent - you can hear every sound and feel
the forest living beneath the snow.
I cannot imagine the planet without forests. I was in Alaska
and British Columbia and saw terrible pictures of clearcutting.
When you see this you want to cry - I think Alaska should
be national parkland forever. The forests will not grow
again as they were. The places in Alaska that used to be
beautiful forests are now desert. It is shocking to see.
It was the same with the rainforest on Vancouver Island.
I think it's criminal. The people who destroy the forests
think only about their profits. We have to stop these people
in some way or soon we'll have nothing.
