Name: Meghan
Position on Board: Web Editor
Nationality: United States (Vermont)
History with Greenpeace: I began working with Greenpeace
by answering telephones for the US office in 1996. My pleasant
telephone voice opened numerous doors for me within the
organization and I was eventually given the opportunity
to use it in communications, campaigns, fundraising and
actions departments. I now work a bit in each area and answer
very few phone calls. This is my second voyage on a Greenpeace
ship; the first was aboard the Arctic Sunrise during its
tour of the US West Coast and Arctic in 2000 when I acted
as ship webmaster.
For me, being at sea with Greenpeace brings together all
the things I love about the organization: the passion of
its people and its willingness and ability to confront -
in the most direct manner possible - the environmental travesties
we face.
Favourite Forest or Best Tree Experience: I had
a chance to visit British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest
in 2000 and was utterly captivated by its beauty. As I entered
the forest, I caught a glimpse of something out of the corner
of my eye. I looked to my left, and there, on the bank of
a river, stood an enormous bald eagle, perfectly still.
I will never lose my impression of that magnificent bird
standing sentry at the mouth of the forest.
My second most memorable experience with the wildlife there
was inadvertently pitching my tent near grizzly bear stomping
grounds (a fact brought to light when I began hearing some
rather ominous sounds during the evening). Fortunately,
the bears were much more interested in the running salmon
than in a smelly American.
