Name: Natalia
Position on Board: Media Officer
Nationality: Argentinian
History with Greenpeace: I started my history with
Greenpeace in the Argentinian office, around 1996. As my
background was a mix of birdwatching and radio and TV journalism,
Greenpeace asked me to work on some documentaries and improve
a newsletter to our supporters.
One of my best memories was around 1999, on the Patagonian
shore south of Argentina, when we were campaigning against
trawler fisheries. We managed to expose those "sea
vampires" - they can absorb all sea life - and make
some changes to those kinds of fisheries.
Another important experience was in Chile with the Americas
Toxic Tour. I was on another Grenpeace ship - the Arctic
Sunrise - and the goal during that tour was to expose how
different countries are experiencing the same problems with
Persistent Organic Pollutants. It's amazing to discover
that all of us are victims of the same pollutants and to
witness the double standards in terms of information and
behaviors from some companies.
And the last but not least, it was a fantastic opportunity
be able to participate in the Deni Demarcation project and
the Amazon tour, to follow every effort and strugle against
Mahogany logging and finally to be involved in this push
to save the last ancient forests.
Favourite Forest or Best Tree Experience: One of
my favourite forests is the temperate forest of South America.
The beauty of this forest, the amazing silence of nature,
and the frozen breeze that touches you while you're walking,
makes this a unique experience.
My other favorite is the Amazon. Last August I visited
(briefly) this humid rainforest where you can hear the concert
of hundreds of birds in the morning and the mysterious silence
of noon ... when the heat is almost unbearable....
In terms of "best tree experience," I shared
this memory with my sister, and the first time that we climbed
a tree when we were around 5 years old... the feeling of
this was superb. The result of this involved reading all
the books with adventures in foreign lands like Malaysia
and Papua New Guinea ....in remote jungles.... and of course
picturing ourselves in those forests.
