Name: Tim
Position on Board: Campaigner
Nationality: British
History with Greenpeace: I started with Greenpeace
in 1988 working on pollution of rivers and the sea around
the UK. The thing that really made me mad was seeing chemical
companies being allowed to spew out legally hundreds of
tonnes of toxic chemicals into rivers and the North Sea.
So as a result my favourite actions were those where we
blocked outfall pipes from these companies - this was very
satisfying, I can tell you. After working on toxic pollution
issues I moved into a variety of other campaigns including
the Brent Spar campaign where we stopped Shell dumping their
oil rig into the Atlantic Ocean. In the forest campaign
I have worked on a number of spectacular forests including
the Amazon and the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada
Favourite Forest or Best Tree Experience: I spent
10 months in Vancouver last year working on the Great Bear
Rainforest campaign. We succeeded in protecting 20 valleys
from logging completely and another 68 valleys went into
a 2 year moratorium. The coolest thing was when I did a
walk with my colleagues into the Elaho Valley not far from
Vancouver where Interfor, a logging company, were planning
to log last spring the remaining pristine areas. We stopped
them doing this and a few weeks later I was able to walk
through this stunning untouched area knowing that Greenpeace
had helped stop it getting completely destroyed - that was
a heart stopping moment no doubt.
