Name: Tyronne
Position on Board: Deckhand
Nationality: Vincentian
History with Greenpeace: I started in 2000 with
the Rainbow Warrior's Southeast Asia Toxics Tour. I joined
the ship in the Philipines and worked on the toxics campaign.
I was involved in some of the actions, such as cleaning
up PCBs left by the US Navy. From there we went to Hong
Kong and Japan where we also did some work on toxics. In
Japan we put banners on a couple of incinerators.
After our work on toxics, we went to the Kurils Islands
in southern Russia where we worked on fisheries. We confiscated
some illegal nets - there was a limit of 2 kilometers for
the nets and some were eight kilometers long. We found quite
a few dead dolphins, sharks and birds in the nets - it was
very depressing.
After doing some work on forests in Vladivostok we went
to the G8 summit in Okinawa where the ship was arrested
and a few crew members were taken to jail for 10 days. We
were there to highlight our concern that nations had promised
to do something about forest destruction but had done nothing.
When I left the Rainbow Warrior I worked on the Esperanza
from June 2001 to December where I was involved in refitting
the ship.
It's my first time in Northern Europe and I'm looking forward
to this forestry campaign.
I am pleased to be a part of the team of people who are
concerned about the environment. Where I am from there aren't
many people who are that concerned about the environment
and I would like to be a model for the Caribbean people.
Favourite Forest or Best Tree Experience: There
was a forest I visited in Okinawa that I liked very much.
It was a young forest - not too many huge trees - but it
was quite beautiful. Close to the forest they were building
dams and roads and we were concerned that they would destroy
part of the forest. It is important to make sure that such
forests are managed sustainably and governments make sure
funding is available to maintain theselands.
