Update from the Rainbow Warrior: Day two
25-26
February, 10:00 pm to 7:00 am. We have spent these hours continuing
to stop the log boat Agia Irene from unloading her cargo
of ancient forest wood in France. Every three hours a new team
of people departs the Rainbow Warrior to relieve the activists
on the log boat. We have a team in an inflatable locked on the
anchor chain, and another team on the cranes above deck. The wind
is blowing and the air is fairly cold, so we want to keep the
shifts short to ensure that everyone maintains strength for whatever
the next few hours hold.
7:30 am. We have now prevented the log boat from offloading
its cargo for more than 24 hours. The Irene, which is
carrying hundreds of logs from ancient forests in Liberia, remains
anchored outside Sete. We have heard that the story of our protest
has been broadcast across France. We just hope that it has made
an impact and that the government will respond as it should: agree
to stop importing wood from the world's remaining ancient forests.
As we watch from the deck of the Warrior, a police boat
circles the Irene and the activists aboard her. We are
all tired from the long night, but we will continue to broadcast
our message for as long as it takes.
2:00 pm. Things have been quiet here for several hours.
Activists occupying the two cranes on the log boat have rigged
a banner between the cranes and will prevent them from discharging
any wood, should the Agia Irene make it into harbor. For
now, though, the Irene is stationary. More French journalists
have joined the Warrior today, some of them bringing news
clips printed this morning which show that the ancient forest
crisis has made headlines across the country.
2:20 pm. We have heard that several police boats are preparing
to leave the harbor. We assume they are coming for us.
