Lesley in the galley

What, nothing to do?

By Lesley, assistant cook. 10 March. I can't believe it…we spent yesterday (Saturday) with no false alarms and no actions. Mind you it was really nice as we had calm weather and sun and could lounge around on deck between jobs.

It seems that the commandos have got the message. They can't leave port without us being informed by our 'spies', so they cannot reach the log ship before we have all our inflatables in the water. Now why didn't they get it earlier?

Anyway, it looks like it will be a quiet weekend for us as the Port Authorities need to speak to the Minister of the Environment and he doesn't work Saturdays and Sundays, so everybody has to wait till Monday morning. Bliss!

I get down to some serious cake making. I have a request for a carrot cake (with the gooey cream cheese icing on top) and I make a gooey chocolate cake (for the no-nuts chaps). Marco also asks me to do another Indian vegetable curry. I decide to make it vegan, with no onions and thus please everybody. It works out well.

A bit more about the galley. Music! Now, as my mates know, I have to cook with music on or I don't cook. Luckily Marco is also into music. The unfortunate bit is that he only likes U2 and only has one CD of theirs. Still, I've got my collection and as long as I let him play U2, four times a day, we have our compromise. Also, I like it loud, Marco doesn't. So when we are both there, it's quiet and as soon as he walks out, I crank it up ;-)

I usually start the day with something nice and mellow (with a bit of bass in it of course). So, out come my three Chris Issaks's CDs and I choose one to sing along to. Later on I move up to Dido and by lunchtime I'm on the Commitments and Tom Jones.

After that anything can happen, but I usually do a big blast of Madonna and Robbie Williams before dinner is served, I can tell you.

I'm saving Offspring and T-Rex for some reason, don't know why yet.

Now, it's a quiet Sunday morning on the Warrior. But it's still exciting. Someone has brought four huge sails and they are now being put up. Once has a colour drawing of forests with a bear, wolf and tiger on it, another has the opposite, ie no trees, no animals. They look absolutely stunning.

Meanwhile, Marco and me are busy in the kitchen putting lunch together. I've decided that I will make 'Queen of Puddings' for tonight's desert. Wonder how I'm going to make 4.5 kgs of breadcrumbs but hey, I've got the time cos the commandos aren't coming.

Bye
Les
