Natalia on deck

Night watch

By Natalia, media officer. 17 March. Here we are again… on the bridge, with the 'Night Watch Report in the Port'. This port is extremely 'bello' because we are in Genova, Italy.

The formal duty of a night watch on board, as far as I understand it, is: a) every hour you need to check that everything is 'normal' on the ship. What does 'normal' mean in a nautical way of speaking? Normal: no fire, normal: nobody hurt, normal: the ship is not moving (away from the dock, of course).

Well, last night was a normal night from 12 to 4 AM.

The difference between Genova and Sete (my night watch in France) is incredible. Here in Italy we are in a fancy port, Il Porto Antico, with a lot of light during the night, people walking around having gelatto (ice-cream). In Sete, France the night was full of no sounds. Let me explain: it is the sound of noise going on, but you can't identify it…

The smells are different too: the Mediterranean Sea breeze is not here. Maybe because we are more in a city.

Back in Porto Antico: we have neighbors.

They are super classy (not all of them) fashion ships, mainly in white and silver color. So the Rainbow Warrior seems like the touch of green in this white picture. We have the 'Mistress II' (SOMEONE is having a self-esteem issue here), the 'Anatolia' (all covered by tropical timber - uh, uh, we MIGHT have something to research....) and other bright silver names that I can read. WAIT A MINUTE!!! I just discovered two revealing names in two ships: the "Mahogany" and "Jaguar." Is it just ME or do we have half of our Amazon campaign here?!?!!?….

Focus, Natalia, focus on the night watch….

Ah!!! Very important advice: prepare a thermos of coffee for the next person that is going to replace you. At 4 AM in the morning you need it!!

Ciao, ci vediamo la prossima,
Natalia
