Diary from a "landcrab" on a ship in transit
By Irene, guest. 20 March. I am turning into a very colourful
human being. My pale Scandinavian face has turned pink from
the sun, and the activities on board have bruised my legs
so that they now have all the beautiful shades of red, yellow,
black and blue. Luckily I haven't really been seasick. I
felt a little funny the first day, but it wasn't that bad.
It turned out that there are as many cures for seasickness
as there are crewmembers, however I am not sure these bits
of advice are all very serious
Normally I take care of the four Scandinavian Greenpeace
websites. Here I get to see how you work from a ship, which
is rather different from updating websites on land. Meghan,
who puts all the updates from the Rainbow Warrior on this
site, has a few tricks to teach me.
I also try to help out with the chores on board, that is
the daily cleaning and maintenance. We also take the opportunity
to do some training. Yesterday I learned how to drive an
inflatable, today I have had both climbing and canoe training.
Chris thinks I have some kind of talent for climbing, and
that I should do it more. I was glad to hear that - I wouldn't
mind! However, in the inflatable canoes I turned into some
kind of overweight sea-lion. A story best forgotten.
This evening, lying here in my bunk, I really feel like
an old 'landcrab', as we say back home. My body is aching
and the only comfort is that it will probably be worse tomorrow.
I have seen my first dolphin in real life, playing around
the bow. The ocean has been calm the last few days, and
the weather nice and sunny. This is my first time on a ship.
I can hardly keep my eyes open, but I think I'll have a
stroll on deck and look at the stars before falling asleep.
It is too beautiful to miss.
Irene
