Update from the Rainbow Warrior
Deckhand/climber Chris shares his thoughts about the end of the
Rainbow Warrior's forest tour in his crew
diary>
Friday,
19 April. Assistant cook Lesley tells of her grand adventures
from the past week in her crew diary No
cakes, try a slice of wood.
As Lesley has been typing away, other crewmembers have been winding
down from our forest tour and preparing for a maintenance period
on the ship. So we will say goodbye, but only temporarily - you'll
see us again. And we hope that next time you see us here we will
be celebrating the decision of governments to stop buying wood
from the world's remaining ancient forests. Unrealistic? No way
- you know better than that...
Monday,
15 April. Five climbers spent the night on board the Amazon
timber ship Balaban after boarding her yesterday during an action
in the Dutch port of Flushing. The Rainbow Warrior and Esperanza
joined forces to stop the ship from entering the harbour and unloading
its cargo. The action highlights the role both the Netherlands
and Brazil play in ancient forest destruction.
As nations meet this week to determine the fate of the world's
ancient forests, please take action: Send
a personal message to your delegate now and we will hand-deliver
it during negotiations in the Hague.
Read more about the action
on the Esperanza web page.

Assistant
cook Lesley describes flying inflatables and iron-gripped second
mates in her update action
ballet:
Monday, 15 April. By Lesley, assistant cook. Have
you ever seen an inflatable fly??? We all stare at Dmitri wrapped
around the rope. How long can he hang on? The tug captain is furious.
One of our action team members boards the tugboat to try and calm
him down and sort out the Dmitri situation. So, Dmitri, bless
him, hangs on and hangs on but gravity prevails. Down he falls.
We have it all on film. He is picked up and we are all laughing
and shaking our heads at our crazy Russian. And do you know what
he does? He jumps back into his canoe, like nothing has happened,
grabs his paddle and off he goes again!! more>
Web editor Meghan spends Sunday afternoon on the deck of the
Warrior as strange and unusual things happen around her. Read
more in her update:
Sunday,
14 April. By Meghan, web editor. 11:00pm. Two Greenpeace
ships, ten inflatables, four canoes and six climbers versus two
tug boats, two police boats, three fire hoses and an enormous
container vessel carrying more than 4,000 cubic metres of ancient
rainforest. Imagine all of those coming together in a small harbour
in the Netherlands and you'll get a picture of our action to stop
the Amazon timber ship Balaban I this afternoon.
Through crackling radios and ringing cellphones I learned that
Greenpeace climbers had made several unsuccessful attempts to
board the Balaban - three fire hoses made the climb up a long
caving ladder impossible. (Listen to climber Damian's
audio update for details.) We launched our inflatables from
the Warrior - six in total - which joined those from the Esperanza.
This was the first time I had seen the newest addition to the
Greenpeace fleet, and she was lovely indeed. more>
