Near future developments

• Reduce dial-up charges:
  • Firewalls to be fitted with in-line encryption for stand-alone PC access via ISPs
  • Disadvantages:
    • Loss of consistent dial-up interface
    • Loss of global access facilities when travelling
    • Conflicts with preference settings in shared applications (email servers and personalities, WWW home page, routing gateway settings, etc)
    • Impossible for central Helpdesk to support
    • Backdoor insecurity
    • Lack of control over bandwidth and response times
