Near future developments
- Reduce dial-up charges:
- Firewalls to be fitted with in-line encryption for stand-alone PC access via ISPs
- Disadvantages:
- Loss of consistent dial-up interface
- Loss of global access facilities when travelling
- Conflicts with preference settings in shared applications (email servers and personalities, WWW home page, routing gateway settings, etc)
- Impossible for central Helpdesk to support
- Backdoor insecurity
- Lack of control over bandwidth and response times
