SEPTEMBER 10 - NORTH SEA TBT DUMPING.

The action to prevent the dumping of toxic Rotterdam harbour sludge in the North Sea has now entered its third day. The barge 'Hein' is still occupied by Greenpeace activists and there has been no dumping of the TBT contaminated sludge for two days. Boarding the barge

On a 'normal' working day, well over ten thousand tons of Rotterdam harbour sludge would have been dumped, totalling sixteen million tons of sludge a year. The barge 'Hein' contains approximately three thousand tons of sludge.

Despite the fact that both the harbour and water authorities are aware of the TBT pollution, they are not taking any action to stop the sludge dumping in the North Sea.They have so far shown no willingness to alternatively dispose of the sludge in the depot near Rotterdam Harbour, which was specially constructed for the disposal of contaminated sludge.

There have been some legal threats by the port authorities to stop the blocking of the dumping, but the action still continues..... Activists on tbt sludge barge
