SEPTEMBER
17 - APPROACHING HAMBURG
On
September 16 we left Scheveningen in the Netherlands following a day
of catching up on lost sleep and (for the unlucky ones) maintenance
on board, and also an open ship for the public and local press. After
the six day action occupying the sludge barge 'Hein' offshore there
are, as yet, no damage claims from the shipping company but the injunction
now rules that we cannot interfere with any of their vessels in the
future. Naturally this does not include other dumping barges from other
companies.
 |
We
set off for Hamburg and made a brief stop at the dumping ground
to lay a wreath in the waves and Tom, who has become the voyage's
bard, read a short poem to mark the occasion. Dumping had already
begun again around us. |
Tonight we will anchor at Landesbruken in Hamburg on the River Elbe
for an open boat on Saturday. 99% of Europe's TBT is manufactured in
Germany at the Witco plant and local Greenpeace groups have organised
events for tomorrow to raise the profile of TBT pollution caused by
the production of this paint.
