The ship, a successor to the first Rainbow Warrior which was bombed by the French Secret Service Agents, is captained by Pete Willcox, who was also the Captain of the first Rainbow Warrior during its last voyage: "We're happy to bring the Rainbow Warrior to Asia as Greenpeace's messenger of peace and environmental harmony. Through the tour, we hope to strengthen the growing community awareness of and demand for action on the pressing pollution problems of the region.”

Rainbow Warrior is a three-masted schooner, powered mainly by wind, and is equipped with solar hot water systems, a desalinisation plant and a comprehensive garbage segregation system. The ship, which serves multiple functions - as a floating office, laboratory, research vessel, communication hub, and direct-action platform - is equipped with state-of-the-art satellite communications equipment.
