UPDATE
From The Rainbow
Warrior currently in the Bay of Bengal

Sunrise on the Rainbow Warrior My name is Brian and today I'm a deckhand aboard this historic ship as we leave India. One of the local newspapers here summed up the toxics tour pretty well when they wrote "a small ship, a big organisation and some small people fighting big challenges"

| Our small ship is crossing the Bay of Bengal now and things should be pretty quiet on our 8 day crossing. I have the 4 am watch with Captain Peter Wilcox. My job is to make sure the captain stays awake, fetch him his tea and coffee, if needed, from the galley, make an hourly run to check the hold and engines to make sure there's no fires, that nothing is rolling around and watch for ships that might be crossing our path. |
| There's
a telex machine on the bridge that spits out maritime warnings. Today's
warning advises that we should maintain a piracy watch as a number of
piracy incidents are reported. It's hard to believe that this isn't something
out of Samuel Pepys 18th century journal rather than a telex that arrived
via a satellite transmission. Listen.... "Alawi Alawi anchorage ....deck watchman informs bridge that 8 pirates, armed with long knives were spotted on the aft deck. The pirates tied up the duty engineer, the duty engineer freed himself, the alarm was raised - all crew mustered and the pirates cut rope and escaped - some engine spares stolen". |
|
The pirates we're most concerned about are the Japanese whaling ships that our comrades aboard the Greenpeace vessel "Arctic Sunrise" are having to deal with in the Southern Ocean but we'll keep a close watch this morning to make sure that our own mission continues unhindered. |
