| Since Silent Spring was published, its predictions have been borne out by further research detailing the wide variety of damage caused by industrial agriculture to water, soil, vegetation and living creatures. Much of the groundwater in industrialized countries is now contaminated or at risk from pesticides and nitrate contamination. Some pesticides notably methyl bromide, a common fumigant, deplete the ozone layer and some such as DDT are listed for priority global elimination strategies because of their well documented damage. Over half the chemicals known or suspected to be hormone disrupters are pesticides. The accuracy of Carson's predictions underscores the importance of adopting the precautionary principle and making the transition to organic farming.

Can anyone believe it
is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons on the surface
of the earth without making it unfit for all life?
