PVC Plastic

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) -- often referred to as 'vinyl' -- is one of the most versatile of the plastic materials which now pervade modern society. It is the second most common plastic, accounting for a fifth of world plastics consumption. It is also the most problematic for the environment.

PVC is now the single largest user of chlorine and its production is growing worldwide. Wastes from PVC production contain dioxins and other highly toxic contaminants; a range of toxic chemicals are incorporated within PVC products; and burning PVC plastic in incinerators or in accidential fires creates dioxins. PVC has now become a significant sources of dioxin on the planet.

PVC is used in numerous different products. The largest quantity is used in building materials, such as cables, floorings, window frames, water pipes and wallpapers. It is also used in packaging, including food packaging, furniture and children's toys.
