Whalers on the run
December 23rd  -  Day 25

The spotter.
The spotter.
Here is the situation. Yesterday morning, the whaling fleet began to run in earnest. They had made other attempts to put distance between us, but this time they ran and kept running.

Their ships are all substantially faster then ours. The Nisshin Maru (their slowest ship) has a top speed of 17.5 knots, compared to our top speed of just under 12 knots.

We chased them for much of the day through the rough sea - dodging the bigger ice chunks, and driving right through the smaller ones. The fact that the Sunrise is an icebreaker, and can safely move at speed through icy waters helped even the playing field. Still, towards the end of the day they managed to escape off our radar.

At 10.30 last night, we picked up a ship on our radar, which turned out to be their spotter vessel. The spotter goes ahead of the fleet to scout for good hunting areas. We played iceberg all night - hoping the rest of the fleet would come along - but this morning the spotter saw us and ran as well.

The fact that they are running shows that our actions over the past few days have had their effect. Even more, I think it is the worldwide scrutiny of their actions that the whalers cannot stand. Special thanks to all the cyberactivists and others who have helped put pressure on the Prime Minister of Japan - whose government financially supports this hunt.

We have one ship. The have five - all faster then ours. We have committed to doing nothing to put them at risk, and received no such commitment for our safety in return. They have fire-hoses and massive water cannons; we have rubber and plastic boats, and friendly smiles.

Wally holds the Hurricane in possition.

But we are a very determined crew. We'll find the whalers again, and with the help from people around the world (including Japan), finally end commercial whaling.

Want help the crew put an end to whaling in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary?
