My name is Clive, and I am the ship's doctor. I am in charge
of looking after the health of the crew, and maintaining the ship's
hospital in order to deal with any medical problems or
emergencies. However, I spend most of my time board as a
deckhand, getting involved with the many aspects of the daily
routine needed to keep the ship running smoothly.
I live in Victoria, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada -
where I work in General Practice as well as in an Emergency
Department of a local hospital.
This is my second trip with Greenpeace, and my first visit to the Southern Ocean and
Antarctica. During my first trip with Greenpeace as
Medic/Deckhand I had a great time getting involved with numerous
campaigns in Europe, including driving the small outboards in
actions and really getting into the thick of it.
I am used to working in remote places, having spent time in
northern Canada as well as a stint of six months in Somalia with
M.S.F. (Doctors Without Borders).
This trip to the Southern Ocean
brings new challenges due to the harsh environment and the
prolonged nature of the campaign. I am passionate about the
whaling issue and conservation issues in general, especially the
excessive plunder of the ocean's resources. The whales need our
support to protect them, and to ensure the survival of their habitat.
One of my hobbies is bird watching and this trip promises to be
very rewarding with many new species living in this unique
environment. Of course, this raises the issue of seabird losses due
to the long line fisheries.
