What history do you have with the campaign to save the whales?
I have been working with media issues in the Nordic countries, both as a journalist for almost ten years and now with Greenpeace. We have focused a lot on Norway, it being one of the countries in the world ignoring the global society's effort to save the whales, and have experienced the importance of an open debate on the issue.
I hoped we could do the same thing here in Iceland, and already I see the Icelandic people meeting us with an open mind and attitude, which is very hopeful.
There is today no purpose, moral, economical or scientific that justifies a few countries ignoring guidelines the rest of the world, with so much effort, have managed to set up.
Why is this issue/the Rainbow Warrior going to Iceland
important to you?
Iceland's decision to start killing whales again is backsliding for our modern society. Therefore, I saw no other option than to come here, and try to change this attitude. The government says it is an Icelandic tradition, but why should we keep bad traditions? If we did that, then women would still not be allowed to vote.
What do you love (or hate) about working at sea?
I love oceans. They're powerful, thrilling diverse and unpredictable. My soul is at humble peace while being close to the sea, and it reminds me of how important it is to keep a balance, both an ecological balance and the balance within.
