Grant

Bosun

United Kingdom

Hey all. My name is Grant, as a lad known as Oaksey, I'm kiwi born of devon and Cornish desent, which is also where I grew up, running amock in the Oak woods and playing in the wild oceans of our westcountry. Now my home yoyos between Cornwall, tradition woodern boat building and NZ where my family lives, and of coarse time at sea, so i'm kiwi, cornish for now.

I'm presently working on the RW as bosun, this in farmers terms is kinda like the foreman of the deck hands, organising, teaching and together getting stuck into keeping the decks and rigging of the ship in shape.

Of coarse with gp ships there are far more unsually tasks at hand, in all forms of activisiam. My own experience with Whaling campaigns is very limited, though after spending time at sea with Greenpeace, and other vessels, your awareness of these creasures does increase.

The whaleing issue now surrounding Iceland's resumption of whaleing, scientific or otherwise, is for me of fundermental imortance. We have for eons been selfish with the use of our environment none more so than with our oceans. The resources of our oceans are now so depleted that we have already pushed to the verge of extintion many species, once rich fish stocks, and the mighty whales. Now is a time for conservation and protection and unselfish acts as a world nation. How can we expect to succeed in safeguarding our oceans, protecting our own selfish future, if countries resume the unnessacry hunt of a creauture so symbolic as the whale?

I am gratefull to have the opportunity to meet first hand the people of Iceland - their reputation as a brave, independent breed is to their credit, their conection to the land and ocean stong. Sailing with the Rainbow warrior can mean i'm labeled as being another just trouble stiring greene. However for me, I try to represent all those who know me, in all their work and trades, heritages and traditions, from knarley ole boat builders, to fishermen, foresters, artisits, farmers and surfers. This is my prilivage.
