BRAZILIAN MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT VISITS GREENPEACE'S AMAZON GUARDIAN

6 June 2000

Santarem, Brazil - The Amazon Guardian received a visit from the Brazilian Minister of the Environment, Mr. Jose Sarney Filho, last night. Sarney Filho came to express his support for Greenpeace¹s Amazon campaign, saying that the organisation is "a very important partner and player in the fight to save biodiversity".

"This is a good opportunity for Greenpeace to expose its intentions: we are here not only to fight illegal and destructive logging, but also to help achieve a new model of sustainable development for the Amazon region", said Greenpeace Amazon campaigner Paulo Adario. The Environment Minister applauded Greenpeace¹s initiatives and added: "We are working in the same direction. That¹s why people say I am a Greenpeacer."

The MV Amazon Guardian is currently docked at the port of Santarem, in the Amazon State of Para as part of the tour of the Amazon River and its tributaries. Greenpeace¹s is working in the Amazon to expose illegal and destructive logging in the region. The expedition will end in Belem at the end of June.
