TOXIC FREE ASIA TOUR

January 8, 2000: "No More Bhopals: A concert for peace"

This was a free and unsponsored concert organised to celebrate Rainbow Warrior's maiden visit to Chennai by public-interest musicians from Chennai and Bangalore attracted more than 5000 youth who enjoyed three hours of music with a message.

The artistes who, along with voluntary supporters from the music industry, pulled off a colourful show where original songs on various themes of environmental justice were played to tunes melding elements of Indian classical and Western music.

The concert was coordinated by "The Banned" and supported by Friends of the Greenpeace. "Greenpeace's long-standing dedication to environmental justice inspired us to bring together musicians in this huge voluntary effort to promote environmental issues among students through music -- a medium of interest to the youth," said John Anthony, lead guitarist of the Banned.

The Banned plans to release an album including songs played during the concert. See the Banned link above or click on the image.

Below is a personal review from Pete, Captain of the Rainbow Warrior:

Satish and Paula It was, without any exaggerating, really, really cool. The main act was a band called The Banned, who are a wonderful, dedicated group of musicians who did the No More Bhopals song which is on music video.

Naturally I had to make a speech at the beginning. "Barf". But you will never believe who stole the show. Honest. Satish on digerydoo and Paula (both ships crew), guitar and vocal, brought the open air audience of 8,000 first to its feet and then to its knees, in a melodic, tight set, ending with an original song of Paula's. The combination of the above instruments, absolutely rocked the entire place, and people were screaming for more as the duo strolled off stage. Paula the ships medic
